EP. 17 Teach a Child to Fish and Kids Fishing Day
In this episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer I chat with former wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins turned pro bass angler Kendall Newson. Newson started an organization called Teach a Child to Fish back in 2008 so that he could use his NFL prowess to help pass along his passion for the sport of fishing that was instilled in him by his father as a youngster to other boys and girls nationwide.
He shares his story and talks about the Teach a Child to Fish organization, what their goals are and what some of the biggest challenges they face being a non-profit and trying to fully serve as many youth as they can. They focus on kids in urban areas and are close to having a permanent facility to better be able to follow-up with kids that come through the program and help individual moms and dads who have kids that want to learn to fish as well.
Recently I participated in Team Nashville Bassmasters Kids Fishing Day, so it was fitting to talk about Teach a Child to Fish. As a club, we took a group of kids out from the Boys and Girls Club of Middle Tennessee. Club Members were also encouraged to bring out other kids for the event as well. I brought along my Qwest Edge pontoon and it was perfect for hosting one of my fellow club member's three young daughters. They were very respectful and well behaved. Everyone either caught a fish or hooked up with one. We had 2 big ones break off for various reasons. I'm certain if we could have landed those, we would have took home the prizes for largest bag and big fish!
After the weigh-in, we had a cook out and presented the prizes. Each kid received a nice Hank Parker signature series spinning rod and reel combo courtesy of Lew's as well as a Team Nashville Bassmasters t-shirt.
It was a big success and I strongly encourage everyone to get involved in supporting organizations such as Teach a Child to fish as well as taking a pledge to pass along your love for the sport to a kid who might not otherwise get to experience what it's like to catch and reel in a fish.
